The Pearl
Victorian erotica underground magazine. There's just
something so
inherently naughty about reading porn, imagining a very
strict British

Making Faces
Creative cosmetic handbook from a famous makeup artist,
with tons of
photos and tips on how to create different looks,
particularly icons of 20th
century pop culture. The makeovers are excellent, too.

Engines of Creation
Nonfiction about NANOTECH (yay!)
Drexler's is the most (over(?))simplified, crystalline
vision of the field, but
it is an easy read, and a worthwhile one because it contains
the ideas that
could lead to a world without poverty, in a fairly easily
justified manner.

Stranger in the Forest
This is the story of a man who decided to travel on foot
across the
island of Borneo. Baaaad craziness! The best travel-adventure
book
I've ever read. It's the tale of a naive young dilettante,
who walks into
the jungle totally unprepared for the reality of it,
and how he manages
to survive. It's a truly amazing story, and it's difficult
to put the book
down once you get started. I've always been fascinated
by places like
Borneo, and this book took me there. -

Very Bad Poetry
Just what it sounds like; collections of some of the
most gut-bustingly
AWFUL verse ever composed. You think some of the bathetic
verse
found on doomcookie webpages is awful? You aint' seen
nothin' yet
until you have read selections from _The Dentologia_
(an epic poem
on diseases of the teeth) or the _Ode to a Giant
Cheese_.

Rucker, Rudy
The Fourth Dimension
Rucker is a mathematician who also writes really interesting
sci-fi.
The book is a description of a fourth space dimension
and how one
could understand and visualize such a thing. The reason
I like it so
much, and why I recommend it to so many people, is that
thinking
about the fourth dimension is such a mind expanding
experience.
Rucker's descriptions are clear and well written, and
the puzzles that
accompany the ideas are great fun. I also like all the
drawings,
particularly the four-dimensional liquor thief stealing
your Chivas Regal
without opening the bottle. -
